第3回国際シンポジウムの目的は、集団内および集団間における信頼の生成とその機能に関心をもつ研究者の間で学術的な意見を交換し、将来の共同研究を促進する機会を提供することにあった。
具体的には、内集団ひいき的、または外集団差別的な行動パタンに関係している心理メカニズムとその適応基盤について議論が交わされた。参加者は、彼ら自身の研究がこの問題をどのように扱ってきたか議論した。具体的に取り上げられた問題は以下の通り：
■ 社会的認知プロセスと内集団行動をつなぐものは何か
■ 認知プロセス（e.g. Nisbett et al.）や自己概念（e.g. Markus & Kitayama）に関して主張されてきた文化差と同じ種類の文化差は、集団を基盤とする行動においてもありえるかどうか
■ 内集団・外集団との関係において人々の行動を導くような「集団についての素人理論」を提唱することは可能かどうか。そのような素人理論の（進化的な、あるいは社会構造的な）基盤はどのように理解されるべきか
■ 上記のような問題に対して、どのような方法論的戦略が用いられるべきか
