第1回国際シンポジウムの目的は、現代の人文・社会科学における中心的問題の一つであり、CEFOM/21の中心テーマでもある「人の心と社会的・制度的布置は、いかにして自己存続的なシステムを構成しているのか？」という問題に関して学術的な意見交換の場を提供することにあった。今回のシンポジウムでは、1) 心理的機能における「文化差」をどのように説明するか、2) 心理特性や文化的信念における「文化差」と、社会的・制度的布置との関係をどのように分析するか、3) 進化的な基盤をもつ心理メカニズムが制度的布置と「文化特定的」な心理特性との間のリンクを形成する過程を、どのように分析するか、といった問題に焦点が当てられた。これらの問題をめぐって、社会心理学・進化心理学・文化心理学・人類学・政治学・実験経済学における第一線の研究者達が、4日間に渡り熱い議論を展開した。
