Title:Cultural Pathways of Social Support: Putting the self in self-esteem or the social in social support?
Abstract:Social support from our relationships is a reliable predictor of mental well-being and physical health. However, prior research demonstrates that the mechanisms and pathways underlying this association can actually produce both health benefits and health costs. For example, prior work in cultural psychology suggests that cultural moderates individuals’ preferences and responses to different types of support based on culturally-valued self-concepts (e.g. independence-interdependence). This talk will explore some of the pathways explored in prior research within the Uchino Social Neuroscience Lab at the University of Utah while also introducing a current project being conducted at the University of Utah and Kyoto University Kokoro Research Center exploring the pathways for health, providing (as opposed to receiving) support, and belonging support (as opposed to emotional, informational, or tangible support).
