タイトル: Truly Recognizing Climate Change as a Global Problem: Implications for Psychological Research

Abstract:
Psychology has much to contribute to addressing climate change. Psychological research has generated valuable insights into topics such as the psychological consequences of extreme weather events, public understandings and misconceptions of climate change, and the effectiveness of interventions designed to promote pro-environmental behavior. However, many current research practices do not fully reflect the fundamentally global nature of climate change. In this talk, I argue that recognizing climate change as a global problem requires more than increasing the geographic diversity of research samples. Psychological research must also explicitly theorize how responses to climate change are shaped by different societal and cultural​ contexts, as well as by the dynamic relationships between individuals and an increasingly interconnected world. Drawing on recent research, I will illustrate how more globally informed theories and research practices can strengthen psychology’s contribution to addressing climate change.
