Title: Environmental Sociology of Energy Transitions: Citizen Participation, Intermediary Support, and Governance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract:
As decarbonization has become a pressing global challenge, the energy transition is advancing worldwide. This transition involves not only a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources but also a broader process of social transformation that prompts a reconsideration of issues such as energy justice, social values of practice, and democratization. At the same time, because renewable energy systems are inherently decentralized, their development can give rise to local conflicts and challenges. As a result, the development of locally beneficial and\/or community-based renewable energy projects has become an important issue.
This presentation provides an overview of these social and policy developments and examines the concept of Energy Communities, which has gained increasing prominence in the European Union in recent years. Drawing on this concept, the presentation explores the characteristics and challenges of citizen-participatory and community-led energy initiatives in Japan. It then considers the roles of intermediary support and governance arrangements in fostering and sustaining such initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Biography:
Dr. Akira TERABAYASHI received a Ph.D. in Human Sciences from the Graduate School of Letters, Hokkaido University. Specializing in environmental sociology, he previously served as Researcher and Senior Researcher at Norinchukin Research Institute, Co., Ltd. and as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the School of Humanities, Hokusei Gakuen University, before assuming the current position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
